Projects
The first industrial thermal battery serving a swimming pool and ice rink.
Toulouse Métropole
Sport / Public facility (swimming pool + ice rink)
Background
World’s first industrial thermal battery commissioned (Sept 2025). Recovery of waste heat from the SETMI energy-from-waste plant (incinerator, 240,000 t/year of waste) transported to the Alex Jany swimming pool and ice rink complex. 2 thermal batteries of 1 MW. Financing: Water Horizon + European Commission (Innovation Fund €2.5M). Stakeholders: Toulouse Métropole, SETMI, European Commission.
SETMI’s Energy-from-Waste plant (UVE) (Saint-Simon district of Toulouse) is a treatment centre for household and similar waste.
A significant amount of this heat is recovered through several district heating networks, allowing part of Toulouse’s population to be heated with low-cost, decarbonised heat. However, the very different production and consumption profiles limit recovery, so some of the heat is lost and released into the air.
The Alex Jany swimming pool and ice rink complex, located 15 km from the plant, is a very busy sports centre that opened in 2011. The proximity of the pool and the ice rink creates a simultaneous need for heating and cooling all year round, allowing great energy efficiency.
With its “Move Heat to Cold” (MH2C) mobile thermal battery technology, Water Horizon will distribute renewable heating and cooling from the plant’s waste heat.
The MH2C battery is charged using heat from the plant; once full, it is transported to the Alex Jany complex to supply heating and cooling simultaneously. To provide continuity of service to the sports centre, this project will include 2 batteries.

Over the past 7 years, WATER HORIZON has honed unique technical expertise and know-how in waste heat recovery and renewable cooling production.
In Europe, industrial waste heat is equivalent to 100 nuclear reactors.

It was from this striking observation that Water Horizon developed its Move Heat To Cold (MH2C) technology: recovering waste heat, storing it and transporting it to supply a remote consumer in the form of renewable cooling.
The MH2C battery recovers and makes use of waste heat between 100°C and 200°C, redistributing it as heat but mainly as cooling down to -10°C
Water Horizon takes care of everything! Whether you produce or consume waste heat, we find your counterpart, size the project, finance it and operate it.

The City of Montigny-lès-Cormeilles (95) has taken a proactive approach to modernising the energy performance of its building portfolio.
For environmental and economic reasons, the City of Roubaix called on Accenta with the aim of reducing the energy consumption of its building portfolio.
The SEA GREEN group is committed to managing and reducing its consumption and improving its energy performance, by implementing an energy management system across all its campsites.
