PepsiCo, production line (Phoenix, AZ)

PepsiCo generates intense heat on its production lines, making them almost impossible to cool. The company had been using a direct evaporative cooling system for years, but it proved ineffective during the summer. The main challenge was to provide sufficient cooling on the production line, located more than 3 metres above ground level and therefore even hotter and harder to cool properly.

PepsiCo and the design team were looking for an energy-efficient cooling solution that would keep upfront costs under control and meet the company’s sustainability goals. Packaged rooftop units were considered but rejected in favour of Air ₂ O. Indirect and direct evaporative cooling makes it possible to achieve low supply air temperatures without a compressor. Air ₂ O’s packaged design allows simple, direct replacement of evaporative air coolers, providing sustainable cooling for the building while optimising energy efficiency.

Air 2 O’s indirect and direct evaporative cooling units enabled PepsiCo to replace its existing evaporative coolers and improve cooling performance without resorting to traditional direct-expansion rooftop units. Thanks to Air 2 O, PepsiCo was able to maintain chilled air temperatures in its production plant while upholding its sustainability policy of minimising its reliance on refrigerants as far as possible, without compromising internal conditions.
