La Rochelle energy-from-waste plant

Background

Several cooling solutions were considered, but Air2O technology was selected for this project. Air2O made it possible to exceed the PUE requirement and design units that could be installed despite significant space constraints. Air2O was the most efficient cooling technology for large spaces on this project.

Description

With its ambition to cut carbon emissions by 30% by 2030, collaboration between waste heat producers and consumers represents a real opportunity for the La Rochelle area.

The La Rochelle Energy-from-Waste plant (UVE) is a treatment centre for waste from local authorities and industry.

The facility processes 65,000 tonnes of waste each year, producing electricity and heat.

A significant amount of this heat is recovered through the district heating network serving the Mireuil and Port-Neuf neighbourhoods and the nearby Rhodia plant. However, recovery is limited and a large amount of heat is still lost and released into the atmosphere.

Based at Chef de Baie since 1994, the fishing port, located a few kilometres from the plant, lands an average of 2,000 tonnes of fish on its quays each year. This intense activity requires significant cooling to preserve seafood. This cooling is currently produced by energy-intensive installations using refrigerants with a high environmental impact.

With its “Move Heat to Cold” (MH2C) mobile thermal battery technology, Water Horizon will distribute renewable positive-temperature cooling from the plant’s waste heat.

The MH2C battery is charged using heat from the plant; once full, it is transported to the Chef de Baie port to supply cooling. To provide continuity of service to the fishing port, this project will include 2 batteries.

Project impact

La Rochelle plant:
  • Improved image
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Upgrading and continuous innovation to keep pace with changing regulations
Chef de Baie port:
  • Equipment renewal
  • Lower operating and maintenance costs
  • Reduced GHG emissions
  • Temperature management (precision, stability) to guarantee the quality and food safety of stored produce

Technology focus

Over the past 7 years, WATER HORIZON has honed unique technical expertise and know-how in waste heat recovery and renewable cooling production.

In Europe, industrial waste heat is equivalent to 100 nuclear reactors.

It was from this striking observation that Water Horizon developed its Move Heat To Cold (MH2C) technology: recovering waste heat, storing it and transporting it to supply a remote consumer in the form of renewable cooling.

The MH2C battery recovers and makes use of waste heat between 100°C and 200°C, redistributing it as heat but mainly as cooling down to -10°C

Water Horizon takes care of everything! Whether you produce or consume waste heat, we find your counterpart, size the project, finance it and operate it.
